This is what you need to know about the Dolby Atmos competitor

Samsung and Google are launching Eclipsa Audio, a competitor to the popular Dolby Atmos for 3D audio. You need to know this.

Eclipsa Audio: everything you need to know

Samsung has announced that it will embrace Eclipsa Audio and add it to its new televisions and soundbars, which will be released next year. Eclipsa Audio is technology for 3D audio. This makes it feel like you are right in the middle of it when watching a series or movie.

Currently, Dolby Atmos is mainly used for 3D audio. Many devices and streaming services support this standard. You usually need to have the most expensive subscription of a streaming service to be able to watch and listen to content with Dolby Atmos.

What is the advantage?

Dolby Atmos is not an open standard for 3D audio. Every time a party adds Dolby Atmos, licensing costs must be paid. Eclipsa Audio, on the other hand, is an open standard with no additional costs.

How can I listen to Eclipsa Audio?

Samsung is bringing Eclipsa Audio to devices that will be released this year, but that does not necessarily mean that you can enjoy this audio technology everywhere with such a device. You first have to find the right content for it.

At the moment, it is only YouTube that supports this new audio technology. This year, creators will have the opportunity to upload videos with 3D audio. So there is no offer yet, but this could grow in the coming years if more parties opt for this new standard.

Does Eclipsa Audio have a chance against Dolby Atmos?

It is doubtful whether Eclipsa Audio really has a chance against Dolby Atmos. It all sounds good in theory: it’s cheaper than Dolby Atmos and open source. Yet Dolby Atmos has been a standard that works well for so long and is embraced by many parties, that it is very difficult for alternatives to get a foot in the door.

However, you should not write off Eclipsa Audio completely. This concerns Google and Samsung, two powerful parties in the market. The companies also work with the Telecommunications Technology Association, with which Amazon, Apple, Huawei, IKEA and LG also collaborate.

What about the Galaxy S25?

The Samsung Galaxy S24 supports Dolby Atmos. There is a good chance that this is also the case with the Galaxy S25, because consumers naturally want to watch content with Dolby Atmos. Samsung has not yet said anything about whether Eclipsa Audio will be added to the new smartphones.
