You use them every day without asking yourself any questions… and yet! Some kitchen utensils are more dangerous than useful, and they deserve to be thrown into the trash immediately. This is particularly the case of plastic spatulas with heat damaged ends.
Melted plastic, a source of endocrine disruptors
In a video recently published on Instagram, Dr. Jimmy Mohamed (who is a general practitioner and can be found behind the account @dr.jimmy.mohamed) explains to us: “We all have this kind of spatula at home with the burnt end. The problem is that the plastic that melted inevitably ended up in our food. And that’s howwe ingest plastic day after day…“
What’s the problem, exactly? “This plastic, which comes in particular from damaged kitchen utensils, contains endocrine disruptorsi.e. substances that disrupt the hormonal functioning of the entire body” adds Dr. Jimmy Mohamed.
Opt for metal or wooden kitchen utensils
And regularly consuming endocrine disruptors is clearly bad for your health: numerous scientific studies have identified an increased risk of urogenital malformations in little boys, precocious puberty in little girls, and hormone-dependent cancers (cancer breast or prostate cancer, for example) in adults, or even chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, obesity, etc.).
To avoid exposure to endocrine disruptors, Dr. Jimmy Mohamed therefore recommends “throw away all plastic kitchen utensils” which could have been in contact with a heat source: instead, opt for wooden or metal utensils. Warning: the same precaution is required for containers! So swap your plastic boxes (potentially dangerous for your health, for the same reason) for glass boxes, which are much safer…
