The 2024 penalty is a big hit for the State, and this manufacturer is not innocent! It is the first to be impacted.
In its latest study, the NGC-Data organization reports the figures for the first half of 2024 for the ecological penalty. In 6 months, the State has already collected more than 737 million euros in taxes linked to the penalty. A colossal sum, also due to the tightening of the penalty since the beginning of 2024.
Renault: first contributor to the 2024 penalty
From January to June, the most impacted manufacturer by the penalty eco-friendly is none other than Renault. The diamond-shaped manufacturer is even far ahead of the competition. In total, buyers of the French manufacturer’s model paid €179,386,914 in ecological penalties. And that’s without mentioning the weight penalty. That’s almost twice as much as Ford, with €96,756,919, which comes second in this sad ranking. The podium is completed by Mercedes, with €85,416,146 in ecological penalties paid by new star-shaped motorists.
These three brands do not appear in this ranking by chance. This is particularly because of their range of recreational utility vehicles (LCVs) which are heavily taxed. For example, for Renault, the Trafic, its flagship LCV, brought in €163,624,212 in 2024 penalties, in terms of CO2 emissions. The Renault Trafic alone therefore represents 91% of the amount paid by buyers for a model from the diamond-shaped manufacturer. The same goes for Ford, where the Tourneo Custom represents more than 90% of the total amount of the ecological penalty paid by new consumers of the American manufacturer.
The top 10 manufacturers most impacted by the ecological penalty
If Renault displays such a gap with its competitors, it is also because the manufacturer sells more models in the first six months of the year. With 152,820 vehicles produced for the French market (LCVs and passenger cars), it is also the country’s leading car seller. It is followed by its long-standing rival, Peugeot, with 132,909 vehicles sold. However, buyers of new Peugeots are only the 8th contributors to the ecological penalty in 2024. After Renault, Ford and Mercedes, it is Volkswagen that comes in at the foot of the podium, with more than 62 million in tax revenue for the French government.
Next come Toyota, Citroën and BMW before finding the lion manufacturer. The last two places in the top 10 go to Porsche and Audi. It is also the Porsche 911, the iconic model of the Stuttgart manufacturer, which is the only sports car in the top 20 models most impacted by the 2024 ecological penalty. And if we remove the LCVs, it is the first car to contribute to the French State’s revenue.
While 737 million euros is already a lot of money, we are only halfway through the year. In total, the tax on the ecological penalty should bring in more than a billion euros to France.
