Many electric bicycles have a drive system from Bosch or Bafang. But there are also brands that equip their e-bikes with a MAHLE system. That manufacturer is now introducing a lighter system for e-bikes. This should reduce the weight of new electric bicycles.
The lighter an electric bicycle, the easier it is to lift it up the stairs or cycle home if your battery is empty. Bicycle manufacturers often try not to make their electric bicycles too heavy. Supplier MAHLE wants to do that new light XS system make it easier. The parts of the XS together weigh only 2.5 kilograms.
To be clear: you cannot buy this new e-bike system separately as a consumer. In the future, you can buy a bicycle with this system, because bicycle manufacturers can contact MAHLE to use it in their e-bike. Decathlon and Cannondale, for example, previously used MAHLE systems in their electric bicycles.
As a water bottle on the frame of the bicycle
Bicycle manufacturers receive a battery from MAHLE that is mounted on the frame like a water bottle, a motor and some other electronics to control everything. Manufacturers can choose from the X20 or the X30 engine, the former according to MAHLE has a torque comparable to mid-motors of 55 Nm. For the X30 this is 45 Nm. It is possible to control the motor with a rotation sensor or with a more natural force sensor.
Small battery
An advantage of the new XS system with few parts is that it can also be used on bicycles which are less standardsuch as electric folding bicycles. However, you will not easily see it in cargo bikes or touring bikes, for example. That’s because the eX1 battery is very small: it weighs only one kilo and has a capacity of only 170 Wh.
According to MAHLE, 100 Wh is enough for most daily journeys, but then you should not want to do much more than drive short distances in the city. It is useful that you can charge your smartphone with the battery via the USB-C port, so you immediately have a power bank.
Urban e-bikes and folding bikes
The system is probably most suitable for urban e-bikes and folding bicycles, which above all need to be light and cheap and where the range does not have to be very high.
Bicycle manufacturer NMR Bikes uses it to produce an e-bike that costs around 1,750 euros. This E-Woki should be launched on the market in 2025 and has… as one of the first bicycles this new XS system.
