This old Apple product was still for sale, but that is about to change

Apple appears to be permanently removing one of its older products from the Store. The USB SuperDrive, which appeared in 2008, was previously sold out in the United States and after 14 years is also disappearing from the rest of the world.

With the introduction of the first MacBook Air, Apple said goodbye to the physical disk drive. To still give consumers the option to use CDs and DVDs, it introduced the USB SuperDrive in 2008. A separate disk drive for your Mac, that is.

The USB SuperDrive is also no longer available in the Netherlands. Previously it was for sale for 89 euros.

Apple pulls the plug on USB SuperDrive

Until now, the USB SuperDrive was still sold by Apple and could be used with all Mac models from 2008 and after. All MacBook and iMac models with a USB-C connection can also use the separate disk drive, but require a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Although there are probably still quite a few people who cannot part with physical discs, Apple’s SuperDrive has had its day. The newer the Mac, the more problems have arisen in recent years with the support of the accessory.

The M1 Macs are particularly sensitive for these problems. A common conclusion is that the new models do not divert enough power to the accessory to operate it.
