This part of the face disappears with age, but there are remedies

Eyebrows are the subject of much discussion in beauty magazines: how to pluck them, brush them, take care of them? Imagine that there are even trends: “fluffy”, “un-done”, “glossy”, extra fine… But beyond an aesthetic aspect, eyebrows are also essential to protect our eyes, and useful to the expression of emotions. However, you may have noticed that over time, we notice them less, if not at all: they sometimes even seem to have disappeared.

Of course, you are aware that with age, you are likely to accumulate health problems, gray hair, loss of vision… but then lose your eyebrows? HuffPostthrough the testimony of experts, explains to us the reasons why they are thinning, and how to remedy it.

According to Claire Wolinsky, dermatologist, “as we age, testosterone and estrogen levels decrease, impacting the hair growth cycle and hair follicle (sebum and hair production zone, editor’s note) himself”. Certain lifestyle habits can also contribute to the problem, such as using sunscreen or moisturizer that clogs the hair follicle and adopting the extra fine trend over several years.

But if “thinning of the eyebrows tends to become more visible from the age of fifty, says makeup artist Tarryn Feldman, Exact age may vary depending on genetics, general health and lifestyle. So, if they change shape suddenly, no matter your age, consult your doctor, as it could be an underlying disease. Among them: hypothyroidismalopecia, eczema, severe dermatitis or even nutritional deficiencies, says Michelle Henry, dermatologist.

Beware of serums full of toxic products

How to counter (if you wish) the natural loss of eyebrows? We hear a lot about growth serums, but be careful because side effects have been documented. Among them: redness, itchy eyes or drooping of the eyelids. If you want to take the plunge, brow stylist Joey Healy advises checking the packaging to avoid certain hormones like prostaglandins, and sticking to serums containing peptides. Otherwise, a good alternative and natural solution can be castor oil.

What if you’re impatient while waiting for these products to work? Makeup is your ally: a little gel to give them substance and a pencil to outline them. And for the most determined among you, there is the semi-permanent option. As makeup artist Nina Soriano teaches us, there’s a blade-shaped tool with tiny needles to create the appearance of fuller brows. On the other hand, experts advise against the tattoo option, because the results are rarely satisfactory, and yet are indeed permanent (and so expensive to remove).

Furthermore, while thinning hair is a problem for many people, some have the opposite problem as they age. Trisha Khanna explains why: “In some people, hair follicles may become more sensitive to hormones, especially androgens (which control the development and maintenance of male characteristics, editor’s note) and this can lead to thickening of eyebrows, nose and ear hairs.” Ultimately, as simple as it may seem, the best advice we can give you is to love yourself as you are and are becoming, from head to toe.
