A pedestrian crossing that has been prohibited for a year in Longny-au-Perche, in Orne, is still waiting to be brought up to standard.
For over a year, a brand new pedestrian crossing has become unusable. This passage is located in Longny-au-Perche, in the department of Orne. It has been closed to pedestrian traffic since March 8, 2023.
Design flaw renders pedestrian crossing completely useless
This pedestrian crossing located at the crossroads of Rue de l’Église does not comply with current standards. A municipal decree was therefore promulgated on 8 mars 2023 to prohibit pedestrian traffic on this crossing. Even if it is well painted on the ground, this pedestrian crossing has a issue. It lacks one lowered sidewalk and there is a marking error which was done in the wrong place.
Faced with this problem, the municipality was forced to close access at this pedestrian crossing. Since its appearance at the beginning of 2023, this brand new crossing has never been used. The president of the Communauté de communes Les Hauts du Perche explained that it was impossible to make the necessary corrections for the time being due to the works contract which has not yet been closed.
This design flaw poses obvious safety concerns. However, the situation has been going on for over a year and no solution has not been put in place to address this.
The inhabitants of the commune are impatiently awaiting the work
To bring the passage up to standard, new works must be planned by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. In the meantime, the pedestrian crossing is still marked on the ground, but forbidden in use. An information panel has been placed nearby to warn pedestrians.
This unprecedented situation poses difficulties some for the villagers. They are now forced to cross further or take other paths to avoid this intersection. Unfortunately, some pedestrians still cross this crossing despite it being prohibited, for lack of a better option.
The situation is outstanding for over a year, but the main objective is to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The upcoming work should ensure that comply with regulations in force and to avoid any incident which could arise due to this non-compliant passage.
This small town in Orne is clearly not the only one facing this kind of problem. This case shows that the retards in the management of public infrastructure are very frequent and inconvenient for the residents concerned.
