Currently for sale, this Peugeot 605 4×4 is (almost) perfect for participating in car competitions in the desert.
The Dakar Rally is the ultimate test for pilots and their racing cars. Two weeks of racing across the desert truly tests your mental, physical and mechanical limits. Now add a French off-road car based on a Peugeot 605 to the difficulty.
A Peugeot 605 like no other
This car could simply pass for a racing car straight from the mind of a mad engineer. Based on a Peugeot 605, this machine has almost nothing in common with the family sedan of the 1990s. Its chassis is allegedly based on a Mercedes G-Class, but it has been modified to handle the extreme conditions raid rallies. The engine is a V6 PRV of 4 liters, placed in the central rear position. We also find a configuration 4×4 designed to tackle sand dunes and rough terrain.
This car was never an official Peugeot project, but it is a nice tribute to the Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 who dominated the Dakar in the 1980s. But unlike its victorious counterparts, this Peugeot 605 4×4 did not really shine in its time.
This French racing car looks more like a torture than anything else. Imagine driving hundreds of kilometers in the desert, shaking like a sack of potatoes with your hands clinging to a steering wheel that is fighting against you. In reality, most of us will want give up from day one.
A restored and extremely formidable jewel
Additionally, it is likely that something breaks in the car. Do you think you’ll be able to repair that V6 in the middle of the desert, with only your co-driver to lend a hand? Created by French engineers in the 1990s, this engine includes vis placed in places where your key will surely not be able to reach.
As for the seats of the Peugeot 605, they are hard like concrete. The suspension is more or less effective, but you’ll still feel every bump and rock. Air conditioning is considered a joke, which really becomes a hassle when you’re driving in a desert where the average temperature is 40 °C. All this, not to mention the vibrations in the cabin or the deafening noise of the engine.
Available for auction on Bring a Trailerthis Peugeot 605 4×4 was restored in 2021 to participate in new competitions. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a true piece of rally history. Currently, an enthusiast has put 10 000 dollars on the table to treat yourself to this car. Who says better? Bidding ends on January 22, 2025.
