The big trick of the Peugeot seen in the Taxi movies was the transformation. It was a field car and a racing machine at the same time, you only had to press a few buttons. Somewhere, the Peugeot 508 PSE also knows this, if we take the fatigue and charge the battery, then on cool autumn days we can cover 25-30 kilometers in electric mode only. According to the WLTP, it can do 46 kilometers, but the on-board system did not measure this either.
This is when the lion hides, we glide silently, with plenty of power for everyday use.
This range shows that the 508 is already old, and plug-in hybrids of a similar size and category usually reach 80-90 kilometers on a single charge. The maximum speed with the two electric motors is 135 km/h, and the 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine is more than that. Of its three modes, its wildest self comes out in Sport. It’s true that no new air intakes are added to the body, nor are wider wheels created underneath (the 245/35 R20 is more than enough), but the whole car becomes sharper in a smile-inducing way.
In this case, all engines give their all, and thus the sprint to 100 km/h is only 5.2 seconds, and the top speed is 250 km/h. It may not be enough against the Germans, but it will be good for the field if we prove the superiority of the French technique with a deep and confident big dummie like Daniel.
The Peugeot 508 PSE is convincing on a straight line, and on a winding road you can feel that the chassis was designed with great care.
It is not too hard, it is quite comfortable, only domestic potholes were not taken into account. With such a sidewall, the craters of our roads can be brutal, this wheel set was designed for the high-quality mountain roads of the Marseille area.
Steering is fast and lively with the small steering wheel, but it could be more “communicative”. The brakes effectively slow down the 1.8-tonne mass, but perhaps due to the energy recovery characteristic of hybrids, the pedal feel is softer than it should be, and finding the perfect amount of deceleration is tricky when driving fast.
There is no problem with its weight, it is a large passenger car, and whoever thinks that the hybrid drive train destroys such cars, remember that the BMW M5 E39 weighed 1795 kilograms with the V8 even in the late nineties.
So, compared to its size, the Peugeot 508 PSE is an agile and nimble car, but if you really get going, you can feel that we have three resources working for a common purpose, but not forming a homogeneous unit. The selected gear of the eight-speed traditional automatic doesn’t always feel ideal, and the small lugs behind the steering wheel are in a crowded space, which makes switching difficult.
But this really only affects one percent of the use, it only came up when we had a family round trip on the Villachi Alpine Panorama Road and climbed a 1,700 meter difference in elevation. Perhaps the special Peugeot feels best on the highway, with its low, graceful shape, wind noise is minimal, only the rolling of the big wheels can be heard, but this is easily suppressed with the Focal audio system.
The technology is really lively in the 130-140 km/h range, where you can really experience the 360 horsepower, if you need it. And if there isn’t, then the fleet-functioning driving support systems help you to drive in a relaxed way, the distance monitor notices the cars in time, and the lane keeper will also accurately determine the direction of travel. As an interesting extra, there is night vision, which is particularly useful, it detects and indicates animals hiding in dark bushes and unlit bikes.
In the city, you have to pay attention to the benches with low sidewall tires, the view is not very good due to the low seating position and the stout pillars, parking is assisted by an advanced camera system. In the snow, the all-wheel drive 4WD mode, which is tuned for stability instead of peak performance, can be useful, the system always reserves enough power so that the all-wheel drive always works on snowy roads when it is needed.
Since we tested it on a long tour, recharging was out of the picture, so as a simple hybrid, the type produced a very low consumption value compared to its performance, weight and size. Depending on the usage, it produced values of 7-7.5 l/100 km, but according to the data of Spritmonitor.de, the average of the owners is 5.2 l/100 km, obviously diligently filled.
