This phone case deters thieves in a very bizarre way

With this striking new phone case you can keep thieves at a safe distance. It is a rather rigorous way to prevent your smartphone from being grabbed from your hands on the street.

In big cities it is commonplace for thieves to snatch expensive smartphones from the hands of passers-by. Phone thieves often strike while they drive past you on their moped or scooter. There is then little point in running after your stolen phone. A shocking statistic: an iPhone is snatched from someone’s hands every 6 minutes in central London.

The design agency JOAN London has come up with a creative answer in the form of four absurd iPhone cases: The Unsnatchable.

Silver spikes

The most striking phone case is the one with the sharp spines, made of a total of 510 grams of solid silver. The case is covered with dozens of pointed spikes and it looks quite dangerous and uncomfortable. But it will definitely deter thieves. In this video you see him in real life.

The case has a few safe places for your own fingers so you can hold it securely. But the chance that you will sustain scratches and wounds seems quite high. In the future, a smart case could automatically extend its spines only in a suspicious situation, but that is still in the future.

Glove and electric eel

The designers of JOAN made three other anti-theft cases and they are just as strange. For example, there is one in the shape of a glove that you wear to always keep your phone in an iron grip. You just have to get on it.

There is also a case that places a curse on the thief. And then there is a cover that imitates an electric eel, which should provide a frightening effect. It also appears that a lot of silver has been used in these cases.

Create awareness

JOAN London is calling on people to send an email if they are interested in one of the very exclusive iPhone cases. A few exam specimens have actually been made. Ultimately, it is not a product for the consumer, but a design project that should make you think.

The aim was to raise awareness about phone thefts on the street. “We wanted to use creativity as a tool to raise awareness and have an impact on this social issue,” said Kirsty Hathaway of JOAN London. Mission accomplished, the message is clear: you have to be careful in busy places in the city and it might be better to leave your phone in your pocket.
