This Samsung EV battery charges in 9 minutes

Car manufacturers are busy with a new piece of technology from Samsung. It’s not about chips or screens, but about a solid-state battery for electric cars.

The new battery technology of Samsung SDI has been with car manufacturers for half a year, who have tested it extensively. According to Samsung, they are interested in the solid-state battery because it is charged in nine minutes. It is also smaller, lighter and much safer than the current batteries in electric cars.

In addition, the solid-state battery could ultimately last as long as twenty years. On the other hand, Samsung’s new battery is considerably more expensive to produce.

Range of a thousand kilometers

For this reason thinks Samsung that the battery will first end up in cars in the most expensive EV segment, which should have a range of between 900 and 1,000 kilometers.

Samsung plans to begin mass production of the solid-state batteries in 2027, as does Toyota, which is working on a similar battery. Lexus is the first brand to equip its EVs with Toyota’s new battery.

What is the largest battery maker doing?

The high production price is the main reason for CATL, the world’s largest EV battery maker, to refrain from producing solid-state batteries for the time being. The company aims to supply 1 percent of its customer base with solid-state batteries by 2027. CATL is also working on new EV batteries that should come with a 15-year warranty, which should make second-hand electric cars more attractive.
