LG showed a screen that is unimaginable. If foldable is still the pinnacle of current technology, this one simply came from the future.
For the last two years, since the first public demonstration of this screen, LG engineers had to work tirelessly. Back then, the screen they presented could stretch from 12 to 14 inches, i.e. less than 20%, and probably if we reached its limit, maybe it would reach 20. Now they passed themselves.
You can almost wring this screen out like a towel
And the new version can stretch up to an astonishing 18 inches, or 0.50% of its original value. What’s more, this screen not only stretches, but also bends and allows you to unscrew it. The entire presentation took place on November 8 in Seoul, at the LG Science Park in front of one hundred invited guests from various manufacturing industries, as well as scientists and other people involved in the entire stretchable screen project. Companies see this invention as the highest form of screen, all because of its freedom of use, and therefore a wide range of applications in many industries.
All this without sacrificing the color quality of the screen. MicroLEDs were used, which was crucial because this type of solution allows the emitting of colors without using an additional layer of light at the back. This technology is so tiny that it is thanks to it that researchers can give free rein to imagine and test the most daring ideas.
At the moment, the number of pixels per inch is not impressive, it is more than four times lower than in the standard iPhone 16 and almost five times lower compared to the Google Pixel 9 Pro smartphone. This, however, must not distract us from the most important point of this show – it is possible. LG boasts that it used a type of material similar to contact lenses, which allowed a lot of freedom in cable management and maintaining a clear image even after 10,000 bends.
In any case, for the average consumer it means little more than curiosity. The costs of this technology definitely exceed not the average budget, but the average wealthy person’s budget (LG’s rolled OLED was about PLN 400,000). It is definitely more of an interesting demo showing a glimpse of the future than a practical application today.
