This smart AI can do many tasks on the computer for you: ‘Just like humans’

Tech company Anthropic has launched an AI system that can independently perform computer tasks for users. The company is taking a major step forward in the development of independently operating AI systems.

The new technology, which ‘Computer Use‘ is integrated into the latest version of Anthropics AI assistant Claude. The assistant can now do much more than just answer questions: for example, it can visit websites, click buttons, fill out forms and navigate through different programs.

According to Jared Kaplan, scientific director at Anthropic, the system can even complete tasks that consist of dozens or even hundreds of different steps. For example, consider booking airline tickets from A to Z or submitting expense claims. This feature allows Claude to “use computers in basically the same way we do,” Kaplan counters CNBC.

From chatbot to digital assistant

With this development, Anthropic goes further than the well-known chatbots such as ChatGPT. While chatbots are especially good at answering questions, these new ‘AI agents’ can perform tasks independently. The difference is comparable to a source of information versus a personal assistant who actually takes work off your hands.

Since today, software developers can try out Claude’s new feature. Companies such as Asana, Canva and Notion already gained experience with the beta feature earlier this year. Anthropic expects consumers and businesses to have access to the service late this year or early next year.
