This smartphone maker encourages you to create your own accessories

Nothing definitely doesn’t do things like the others. The brand behind the CMF Phone 1, an affordable and customizable smartphone, wants to give free rein to users’ imaginations. The firm has just released 3D files that can be used to create 3D printed accessories. The files are in .stl and .stp format with 3D models of the CMF Phone 1’s back cover, reports 9to5Google.

It is possible to use them with 3D printing software to create custom cases or other accessories for the smartphone. Nothing explain :

“As our community is very creative, we have put together for the first time detailed documentation describing the physical dimensions of a CMF by Nothing product, everything you might need to get started.

Whether you’re an experienced creator or just a hobbyist, CMF Phone 1 offers lots of exciting possibilities… we might even consider producing some of your ideas, so don’t forget to show us what you’re working on!

Additionally, Nothing points out that the screws on the back of the device are regular M2 screws, so it should be easy to get replacement screws.

Nothing gets even closer to its community

An interesting initiative from the manufacturer and not surprising when you know the co-founder of Nothing. Carl Pei is above all known for being the co-founder of OnePlus with Pete Lau, a company that has extended its reputation by betting on its proximity to the community. The method is used again by Nothing, as we were able to discover in March with the Community Edition project. Before the release of the Phone 1, Nothing invited its community to co-create a new version of the Phone (2a). The project is ongoing and is currently in phase 4, dedicated to submissions for the marketing campaign. We are now waiting to see the first creations from the CMF Phone 1 users.

One of the special features of this smartphone is its unibody polycarbonate shell. It is possible to replace this shell easily by unscrewing the four screws on the back of the smartphone. Nothing offers different shells and the modularity does not stop there. It is also possible to attach accessories to the back of the smartphone. Enough to make it a success? The first results are encouraging. The CMF Phone sold 100,000 copies in 3 hours when it was launched.
