While the end-of-year holiday period is the ideal time to enjoy smoked salmon, Top Santé shares with you a previous investigation conducted by 60 million consumers revealing the best reference from a health point of view. The association took into account the taste, the price, but also and above all the salt content and pollutants, harmful to health.

The consumer association mandated 63 experts, from various socio-professional backgrounds, to thoroughly evaluate 20 smoked salmon references, from the red label to organic products including more affordable choices.

Industrial smoking methods produce harmful substances

It is important to remember that smoked salmon contains toxic substances. Therefore, it should not be consumed in large quantities. The reason? Industrial smoking methods, which are dangerous and produce these harmful substances.

In addition, if salmon is known for its omega-3 content (fatty acids essential to the body and good for the heart), it loses a good part of it when it is smoked, in addition to gaining in toxicity. Smoked salmon is therefore not the best choice from a nutritional point of view, a nutritionist will tell you.

Luckily, if you eat it every once in a while, there’s nothing to worry about. The holidays are also an opportunity to treat yourself.

It’s the smoked salmon raised in Scotland from U Saveurs which is in first place

The results show that red label references occupy the first places in the ranking of 60 Million consumers, with scores above 16/20. And it is the smoked salmon raised in Scotland from U Saveurs, available at the price of 4.20 euros for 80 g, which is in the lead with a score of 18/20.

In second position, we find organic Atlantic salmon from Bio Village, offered at 3.33 euros for 65g (two slices). According to the recommendations of 60 Million consumers, opting for slightly more expensive products can be an effective way to guarantee appreciable quality and avoid any disappointment during tasting.

In third position is La Norway smoked salmon from Labeyrie, a brand well known for its seafood products. This product, sold at 6.27 euros for 140g, received a remarkable score of 17/20 in the analysis carried out by 60 million consumers.

Smoked salmon: watch out for salt and pollutants

The consumer association warns about the salt content, still very present in smoked salmon. “The smoked salmon relegated to last position in our test are considered too salty. This is surely explained by the use of brine rather than dry salt for the lower price brands.“.

It is important to emphasize that salt is often used by manufacturers to ensure the taste and preservation of products. However, salt compromises heart health and is conducive to water retention. Hypertensive people, be vigilant!

Finally, smoked fish are rich in heavy metals and other pollutants. The reason? In addition to being at the top of the food chain and feeding on small fish, which are themselves contaminated, oily fish are known to accumulate more heavy metals than any other species. This is why health authorities recommend consuming it only once a week.“, adds 60 Million consumers.
