This solar panel for electric vehicles is particularly clever

Imagine yourself driving your electric car, the battery level dangerously low, and no charging station in sight. This distressing scenario could soon be a thing of the past thanks to GoSun’s latest innovation: a solar charger for electric vehicles.

No more hassle of recharging

This device, which uses exclusively solar energy to recharge vehicle batteries, is capable of providing up to 48 km of additional autonomy every day. The charger, compact and lightweight (32 kg), is fixed to the roof of the car and can generate 200 W when closed and up to 1,200 W when fully extended (but in this case it will be impossible to use the car). This practical solution allows users to recharge their vehicles anywhere, as long as they have access to sunlight.

The solar panel can be installed on the roof of a vehicle in 20 minutes with the help of two people. When closed, it measures 119 x 122 x 13 cm and, when fully extended, it reaches a length of 622 cm. While any object on the roof of a vehicle creates an additional aerodynamic drag, the company claims that the profile of the charger reduces this effect. However, given that it is not practical to install and remove it regularly, the weight will undoubtedly have a noticeable impact on the overall performance of the vehicle.

The charger is designed to meet Level 1 EVSE charging protocols and stores energy in a lithium-iron-phosphate battery to manage solar intermittency. This ensures optimum safety and avoids fire risks. And of course, the device, once deployed, reveals additional solar panels, which increases its energy production capacity.

For camping and outdoor adventure enthusiasts, this foldable solar panel provides a reliable charging solution even in the most remote areas. In urban areas, it provides free and regular charging by simply parking your vehicle in a sunny area. Home solar panel owners can also use this charger as a backup solution in the event of a power outage.

The charger is priced at $3,000, with a $100 refundable deposit. That’s steep, but the long-term benefits of energy savings and extra range may be worth the investment.

The GoSun team, which has previously worked on solar equipment for stoves and travel trailers, has taken more than $1 million in preorders for its solar charger for electric vehicles. It’s on track to hit the market as early as 2025.
