In a Youtube video, the Professor and founder of the nutritional program Zoe, Tim Spector, draws on the results of a recent study, carried out on 96,000 people, which demonstrates that yeast extract is one of the best substances against hypertension. However, this is one of the main ingredients of a salty spread.
Why might a certain spread help reduce tension?
Professor Tim Spector explained that Marmite spread could play a major role in reducing blood pressure, as could potato chips which are rich in yeast extract.
For clarification, the Marmite spread, owned and marketed by the British-Dutch group Unilever, is a brown, salty spread with an umami flavor (close to broths and meats, its taste is protein). It is made from rich brewer’s yeast (a substance used in the production of alcohol), vegetable concentrate, celery and spices.
However, it should be remembered that these industrial foods can be rich in salt and additives, and should therefore be consumed in moderation. This is therefore no reason to consume excess spread!
“People who consume a lot of potassium have lower blood pressure”
Dr. Tim Spector continues his video by giving other recommendations for lowering high blood pressure, including reducing the consumption of alcoholic beverages. “Alcohol generally has a negative effect on blood pressure. The only thing you can do is reduce your alcohol consumption”explained Tim Spector.
He also highlights the importance of minerals, particularly potassium. “People who eat a lot of potassium have lower blood pressure, and studies have shown that this is more important than salt. So this is a major discovery, because it’s something we can all do. You can actually improve your potassium intake”declares the specialist.
To stock up on potassium in case of high blood pressure, you can eat legumes, dried fruits, bananas, potatoes and soy beans.
