Streaming service Apple TV+ has so far had a small offering of its own series and films, but the iPhone maker now wants to change tack. Apple plans to offer more popular films on its streaming service in order to increase competition with Netflix. Apple is negotiating with major Hollywood studios about this.
The iPhone maker is in talks with “some of the world’s largest film producers” about buying movies, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. to Bloomberg. It would mean a major change of course for Apple TV+. Apple has built its streaming service in recent years with its own productions, with Ted Lasso and The Morning Show as well-known examples.
Netflix has more subscribers and fewer cancellations
Apple TV+ subscriber numbers still lag far behind its competitors. Only 11 percent of U.S. households subscribe to Apple TV+, while a whopping 55 percent subscribe to Netflix. While other streaming services offer thousands of titles, Apple TV+ has a much smaller selection.
This appears to have consequences. According to research agency Antenna, Netflix has the lowest number of cancellations of all streaming services, while cancellations at Apple are on the high side. In order to keep subscribers on board, Apple now wants to add more well-known film titles.
Apple experimented earlier this year in the US by offering around fifty well-known films from Hollywood studios on Apple TV+. According to Bloomberg, that experiment was a success and the company is now approaching the studios for many more films. The intention is that these can also be offered internationally on Apple TV+.
Selling movies and series to competitors
It has not been revealed which Hollywood parties Apple is negotiating with. Even competing parties that have streaming services themselves, such as Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, are now prepared to sell part of their content to their rivals. This is because the focus of the companies has shifted from subscriber growth to the profitability of the streaming services.
