Accustomed to feeling tingling sensations on the right side of her neck, down her arm and down to the tips of her fingers whenever she drank alcohol, Lauren Firenze Gill wasn’t really worried about the symptoms but had got into the habit of only drinking non-alcoholic drinks.
She was just an exception at the end of 2018 when a friend suggested she toast the holidays with a small glass of Bailey’s. “At that moment, I felt like needles were going all over my right side, from my neck to my fingertips,” she explains. in a video. “Then my arm went numb and I couldn’t feel my fingertips and I thought, oh my God, something is wrong,” she recalls. “So I decided to see a doctor.”
A surprising symptom of Hodgkin lymphoma
Examinations then revealed that Lauren suffered from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an uncommon cancer of the lymphatic system but which affects many young people aged 15 to 30. The British Cancer Research Center even estimates that this cancer has increased by almost 40% since the end of the 1990s.
The most common symptom of this cancer is swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, groin, or chest. This is also accompanied by fever, night sweats, loss of appetite and weight, or even itchy skin.
But although we don’t really know why, people with Hodgkin’s lymphoma can sometimes feel pain, numbness, or painful tingling when they drink alcohol. Some theories suggest that alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate, causing the cancer in the lymph node to pinch a nerve, creating the tingling sensation.
