Valve is developing new own-brand controllers, the Steam Controller 2 and SteamVRwho would come to renew their hardware offering. They have been leaked in the official virtual reality software code and are expected to be available in 2025.

The second generation of Valve’s official controller, codenamed «Ibex»resembles the design of the Steam Deck controls and retains a format similar to the Xbox controller. As for the new virtual reality controllers, codenamed «Roy»appear much smaller than the Valve Index controller and closely resemble the controllers on the Metal Quest 3 headset. Multiple stages of design have emerged, but what appears to be the final model features the full set of buttons, sticks, triggers, and grips. that are expected from any standard controller.
Unlike the Quest 3 controllers, Valve has added a directional pad and moved the four face buttons to the right controller. Roy is the first concrete evidence of Valve’s future plans for virtual reality since references to a standalone device codenamed “Deckard” appeared in 2021.
Details about the project are scarce, but another recent leak revealed that Valve’s interest in ARM for Linux will make this ‘Index’ a device with the architecture that wants to overthrow x86 in the PC market. The leak of the renders you see in the images in this article and their appearance in Valve’s official software code, suggest that the company is actively preparing to launch these two devices that would underpin its line of own hardware beyond the fact that the portable console continues to be the absolute star.
