According to the State Border Guard, 116 cases of damage to the fence by persons attempting to illegally enter Latvia were recorded on the Latvian-Belarusian border. In addition, in another 63 cases the fence was damaged due to weather conditions.
Construction of the border fence was completed in July this year. 4,856 people were detained for attempts to illegally cross the border in 2023, another 21 people were allowed into Latvia for humanitarian reasons.
The government has decided to extend the enhanced border security regime with Belarus until December 31. It extends to the Ludza region, Kraslava, Augsdaugava municipality, Daugavpils and some parishes of the Rezekne region.
