Prague – According to information from ČTK, the first child born in Prague this year is a boy, Artur. He was born 26 minutes after midnight in the Motol University Hospital. ČTK was informed by spokeswoman Jana Merxbauerová. At the Mother and Child Care Institute in Podolí, a boy was also born 41 minutes after midnight, his name is Matěj and he weighed 3,240 grams, said ČTK spokeswoman Gabriela Hošková.
Two babies are expected tonight at the Thomayer University Hospital in Krč. Another newborn was about to be born after midnight at the University Hospital of Královské Vinohrady. The first baby born in 2024 in Prague was a girl named Lara, who was born eight minutes after midnight at the Bulovka University Hospital.
The capital city of Prague traditionally rewards all children born on New Year’s Day to mothers with permanent residence in the capital city with 15,000 crowns. According to the municipality, the tradition of presenting a gift to the first citizen of Prague probably originated in the 1960s. Until 2000, only the first baby received a gift, currently all New Year’s babies receive it.
From the beginning of the year to the end of September, according to data from the Czech Statistical Office, 9,062 children were born in Prague.
