Thomas Reis explains the reasons for expulsion

In his opinion, former coach Thomas Reis had to take his hat off from FC Schalke 04 due to a lack of patience in rebuilding after the 2022/23 relegation season.

“My time at Schalke was too short, the release came out of nowhere for me. I had the feeling that my work wasn’t finished yet. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any more time for the change,” said the 50-year-old in the “WAZ “-Interview.

Previously, it was “not possible” for the financially struggling Schalke team to fulfill his transfer wishes, emphasized Reis. “I can’t say: I’m resigning now.”

The ex-professional added: “In hindsight you can say that it wasn’t just me that we started so badly that the season turned out like it did. If the season had turned out well under Karel Geraerts (Reis’ successor, ed. d. Editor) developed in a different direction with this team, I would have asked myself more: What did you do wrong?”

Nevertheless, he “learned a lot” at Schalke, said Reis, who has been working successfully for Turkish first division club Samsunspor since the start of the current season. “It’s important to me that I stay true to myself and honest.”

That’s why Thomas Reis needed a break after leaving FC Schalke 04

There were around nine months between his expulsion from Schalke and his involvement in Turkey, even though Reis was repeatedly traded to other clubs. “After my time at Schalke, I needed some rest, also to reflect on myself,” he said, “but at some point I got the itch again, I really wanted to be back on the line.”

When looking for an employer, he also looked abroad from the start. “In Germany there were no interested parties to whom I said: This is a 100 percent fit,” said Reis. “Then an opportunity arose at Samsun.”

Despite a strong start to the season with five wins from seven games, the goal of his new team remains to stay in the league, emphasized Reis. “We don’t have the individually best and broadest squad in the Süper Lig, I tell the players that too. But the good start makes them believe in themselves more.”
