Thousands of China packages pour into Denmark

Danes have largely developed an appetite for ordering cheap goods from China to their mailboxes via the internet.

This is evident from figures from the Danish Customs Authority, which Detailwatch has obtained insight into.

The figures show that 121,000 packages arrived directly from China to Denmark in April. In July, the number was 110,000.

The figures are respectively four and five times higher than the figures recorded for the same months in 2023.

It does not appear from the overview who is the sender of the packages. But Jakob Kjeldsen, who is branch director of DI Handel, has no doubt that it is the e-commerce platforms Temu and Shein that are behind the increase.

Both are based in China and are among the Danes’ 10 most used webshops.

They sell goods that are not produced according to the same rules and controls as Danish and European manufactured goods.

– There is a reason why they are so cheap, and that is why we are so worried, says Jakob Kjeldsen.

However, it is probably only the tip of the iceberg from China that the Customs Agency has registered.

Many purchases at Temu and Shein are sent to Denmark via other European countries and therefore do not appear in the statistics.

The figures from the Danish Customs Agency also show that the inspection of the many packages is very sporadic.

This year, the Danish Customs Agency has checked an average of 130 packages each month, which corresponds to around one per thousand of the packages that land in Denmark from China in the busiest months.
