A statistic published by the Romanian Police shows that thousands of drivers were left without a license following drug tests carried out in the first half of the year. Many others were caught drinking and driving or without even having a driver’s license.
Thousands of driving licenses were suspended in the first half of the year as a result of drug tests. Also, many drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
Also worrying is the number of people who were driving a car without having a valid driver’s license.
Thousands of drivers, without a license because of drug tests
More than 6,100 drivers were detected under the influence of alcohol or drugs by the traffic police in the first 6 months of 2024.
Of these, 2,059 had their license suspended for driving a vehicle under the influence of psychoactive substances.
According to the law that was in force until June, drivers lost their license on the spot if they tested positive for a breathalyzer or drug test. In the case of those who refused the traffic test, the withholding of the license was ordered after the result of the laboratory analysis.
Also in 2024, more than 7,670 offenses of driving a vehicle without holding a driver’s license were found.
How many drivers refused the road test in 2024
According to a response sent by the Romanian Police to hotnews.roin the first semester of 2024, at the national level, 322 situations were recorded in which motor vehicle drivers refused to be tested with the breathalyzer device.
In another 194 situations, the drivers refused to be tested with the drugtest machine.
Currently, the license is held for a maximum of 3 days for drugs or alcohol. Afterwards, it is returned to the owner until the results of the biological sample arrive. If the tests confirm the presence of alcohol or drugs in the blood, the license will be withheld, again according to the law.
In addition, if the act is classified as a crime, the drivers will be sentenced to prison with execution. And they can stay even 10 years without a driver’s license.
