Thousands of supporters of imprisoned ex-prime minister Imran Khan are heading to Islamabad News

Thousands of supporters of the imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived today in the Pakistani capital Islamabad and are demanding his release.

In the past two days, the government has tried to block the main roads to the city to prevent convoys of protesters arriving from different parts of the country, the AP agency wrote. According to Reuters, one policeman was killed in clashes with security forces.

Khan, a former captain and star of Pakistan’s cricket team, was the country’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, when he was voted out of confidence by parliament. Khan is being prosecuted in more than 150 cases, including cases of corruption or disclosure of the contents of a secret document. In some cases, he has already been sentenced, including 14, 10 and 7 years in prison. He has been in prison since August 2023.

Today’s march on Islamabad is another of the protest marches organized by Khan’s Justice Movement (PTI) party. The protesters are also demanding the annulment of the results of the parliamentary elections of this February, which they consider rigged, which the government refuses. Khan called on his followers to head towards parliament and stay there until their demands were met.

Pakistani security forces expect around 10,000 protesters, the PTI party claims that there will be many more. More than 4,000 of Khan’s supporters have been detained since Friday and authorities have restricted the operation of mobile networks, the AP reported.
