We live in a time when even a small child carries a smartphone in his pocket. But the prestigious school Eton College is introducing the opposite. He wants students to focus more on learning, so he cuts them off from smartphones.
Prestigious boarding school Eton College bans smartphones for new students and gives students basic ‘dumb’ phones instead Nokia. The move is meant to promote focus on education and minimize distractions caused by constant connectivity to the online world.
From September, first-year students will only be able to use Nokia push-button phones, which allow calling and texting, but do not have access to the Internet. Phones may only be used outside of school hours. However, the school goes somewhat against its own regulation, during classes the students have iPads available from the school. However, the school states that it is for academic purposes only.
This new rule replaces an earlier measure from 2018 where students had to hand in their smartphones overnight. Eton is responding to growing concerns about the negative impact of social media on young people. The school believes that this step will keep some of the young people unscathed by the modern age and thus better focus on education and self-development.
