Thule offers a rear box instead of a roof box

Energy consumption improved by 5% compared to the same vehicle without the box

The Swedish company Thule is best known for its roof boxes that allow you to secure additional space for your luggage with relatively simple assembly and use. But the development department of this company does not sleep, the idea of reducing energy/fuel consumption also reached the industry of vehicle accessories and thus a new box was born – Arcos.

We omitted the adjective – roof, because that box is no longer on the roof, but is fixed on the hook, that is, the rear bracket to which trailers are usually connected.

As he states HAK magazine, Thule Arcos is offered in two different versions with 300 or 400 liters. The weight of the box is 17 kg for the smaller version. The maximum allowed weight is 50 kg. Thule technicians conducted wind tunnel tests to verify the reduction of air resistance by using rear racks. They traveled more than 5,400 kilometers with the electric Volkswagen ID.4 to test the energy consumption in practice. Energy consumption is improved by 5% compared to the same vehicle without the box, which would mean about 17 kilometers more traveled in the case of this model.

It is true that the Arcos, in either of its two versions, offers a generous carrying capacity, more than enough to alleviate the usual shortcomings that occur on long journeys with the car at full capacity. The shape of the box also allows you to place items of considerable length (it has a width of 141 cm), but above all, load it with great ease at the ideal height for this task.

The price of Arcos in size M of 300 liters is 854 euros, while for L of 400 liters you have to pay 899 euros. To this amount should be added 359 euros, which is the cost of the platform for anchoring the trunk.
