TikTok copy Instagram Notes I

After Instagram had constantly expanded Notes, TikTok is now following suit. It is conceivable that the long-term goal is monetization.

TikTok is expanding its own social media platform with a new feature that was already established on Instagram last year. What was developed there as Notes is now called Thoughts on TikTok. Similar to Instagram, users can now post short text messages directly to their profile overview, which are displayed to followers for up to 24 hours.

Why isn’t the feature called Notes? Attentive readers may have recently noticed that TikTok launched an add-on in the past called TikTok Notes. This was a standalone app that was visually reminiscent of Pinterest, while its use was inspired by Instagram. TikTok wanted to create a place that was primarily about photo content. However, according to Threads user Jonah Manzano, TikTok Thoughts should look like this:

As on TikTok, so on Instagram

Instagram launched the Notes feature back in January 2023. These are short posts with a maximum of 60 characters that are only displayed temporarily. Notes are rather private because they are only shown to close friends or people who are followed back. Starting as an add-on in the DM view, the feature was further rolled out to the profile view as well as a reaction to posts and reels. Similar to TikTok, the aim is to boost engagement and community building. This is how Instagram Notes are displayed in the app:

Instagram is pushing Notes extremely hard – just in May, the view was expanded to include three additional features: liking notes, tagging accounts and encouraging reactions with prompts. It is to be assumed that the compact display could be a place where advertising is displayed in the future and that the function will therefore be promoted and copied. After all, Meta is constantly looking for monetization options to increase sales. What expectations TikTok has of the Thoughts copy and whether the function will prevail remains to be seen.
