TikTok’s science and technology feed will be active by default for all users

TikTok’s STEM feed is designed as “a dedicated space to explore videos related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” Initially, however, this feed was only active by default for users under 18 years old. However, now, that has changed.

TikTok's STEM Feed Expands to Adult Users

Or TikTok returned recently made the STEM feed accessible by default to all users in the US, UK and Ireland, allowing adults to easily explore this educational content. Canada joined this list of countries in early October, expanding access to all of North America.

For those who are unfamiliar, STEM represents a set of disciplines - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - that are increasingly considered essential for lifelong students. Fortunately, TikTok is now contributing to this learning ecosystem through its dedicated STEM feed, facilitating access to relevant information and resources.

While TikTok has always had STEM-related content, this particular feed is a game changer. Unlike general posts, videos that appear in the STEM feed go through a review process. This guarantees the educational value and accuracy of the content before reaching the public.

How to activate this feed

This new feed constitutes a positive alternative in an app often dominated by content led by influencers that do not always aim to educate. To find the STEM feed:

1. Access the "Profile" tab and click on the hamburger menu located in the top right corner.

2. Then click on "Settings and privacy".

3. Here, go to "Content Preferences."

4. Now click on "STEM Feed".

5. And finally, "Activate".

When you return to your videos, you'll see TikTok's STEM feed on the left side of your "Following" feed.

TikTok and other social platforms have often been criticized for potentially negative impacts on users' mental health. Offer a feed dedicated to educational content like STEM serves as a response to these concerns.
