Tim Christiani presents his first solo collection

Dutch fashion designer Tim Christiani, known for his work at Ninamounah and Bonne Suits, launches his first solo collection titled ‘In And Out Of Grace’. FashionUnited is present at the presentation and speaks with the designer about his future plans.

The collection consists of items made from deadstock materials, meaning that Christiani uses leftover fabrics that would otherwise be thrown away. A striking element in his collection is the use of human hair. “People are very vain about their hair. It is an extension of ourselves. Yet it is often thrown away after cutting,” he explains.

The collection’s name is inspired by the song “In ‘n’ Out of Grace” by Mudhoney. The song explores the boundaries of freedom with the words: “We want to be free to do what we wanna do. We want to be free to ride. We want to be free to ride our machines without being hassled by the man.”

Freedom is an important value for the designer. When asked if he considers wholesale, he says: “Fashion is commercial. When a designer shows his pieces, the question immediately comes up: ‘When are you going to sell?’ An artist is never asked when they are going to sell their posters to Ikea.”

“At Ninamounah I learned that the fashion system is flawed. You have to work hard and there is little left of yourself. I want to see if I can manage as a fashion designer to tackle it at my own pace, slower. That seems more sustainable to me.”
