The first hearing of the case in which 15 defendants, including the former “presidents” of the so-called Armenian administration, Arayik Harutyunyan, Arkadi Gukaysan, Bako Saakyan and the so-called “parliament speaker” Davit Ishanyan, were tried, was held at the Baku Military Court.
At the hearing, those who had been detained in Azerbaijan for a while and were accused of “planning, initiating and executing war”, “genocide”, “destruction of the people”, “slavery”, “forcible displacement of the people”, “torture”, “violating the rules of war”, Defendants tried for “intentional murder”, “terrorism”, “financing terrorism”, “plunder”, “changing the constitutional order by force” and other crimes Their identities were determined and their rights were explained to them.
Asking for a word from the court, Harutyunyan stated that he had a statement regarding the missile hit of Ganja during the 2nd Karabakh War and that he was sorry for this.
Harutyunyan said, “The people of Azerbaijan think that this order was given by me. But I did not take this decision. It is true, I had a statement about this incident. Now I express my regrets for this statement and apologize. I did not have such authority. I did not explain why I gave that statement. “I explained it in my statement in the investigation.” he said.
The hearing was postponed to January 21 after the identification of the defendants.
RUBEN VARDANYAN ALSO FACES THE JUDGE
After the hearing of the former executives of the so-called Armenian administration, former “state minister” Ruben Vardanyan was also brought before the judge in the same hall.
After the identification, Vardanyan’s lawyer requested that his client’s file be combined with the files of the other 15 defendants and that additional time be given for the examination of the indictment.
While the court did not accept the request to merge the files, it decided to give Vardanyan and his lawyer an additional 10 days.
It was decided that the next hearing of Vardanyan, who is on trial for “financing terrorism”, “taking part in the formation and activities of illegal armed groups” and other crimes, will be held on January 27.
Following the anti-terrorist operation launched by the Azerbaijani army on September 19, 2023, some former administrators of the so-called Armenian administration, which established the occupation regime in Karabakh, were detained by Azerbaijani security forces.
