Time stood still with this 20-year-old Renault

You can rarely buy a car with 303 – yes, 303, that is, three hundred and three, not 303 thousand – kilometers from the first owner. Especially one that is rare and original.

Renault was not afraid to dare to dream when it presented the Avantime, the love child of the station wagon and the coupe, around the turn of the millennium. With considerable delay, in 2001, the French launched the strange model, which was probably not helped by the fact that it was built on outdated foundations, as it adopted the floor plate and drivetrain of the 1994 Espace. After only two years, it was announced that they would not continue the production of the Avantime, and together with the model, Renault’s production partner, Matra, also failed.

During this time, only 8,557 units rolled off the production line, and knowing this, it is even more of a curiosity that there is an almost new, barely used unit, which was put on the market in Germany in April 2004. We almost wrote that it has been wearing down the roads ever since, but with this poor performance, the claim would hardly be true.

Moreover, the reality is that it spent the last two decades mostly in showrooms, so it was stored at 18-20 degrees Celsius and in dry conditions. There is no doubt that this can be seen in its condition, but it was not revealed what the bigger one, 2946 cm, is actually capable of.3V6 gasoline engine, which delivers 210 horsepower and 285 Nm to the front axle. The Avantime accelerates from 0 to 100 in 8.6 seconds, but the speedometer index climbs up to 220 km/h.

The Renault in exceptional condition was purchased by Mobile.de was advertised on its website, and at a price that shows that it is not an ordinary used car. They would part with it for 34,990 euros, which corresponds to more than HUF 14 million at the current exchange rate. By way of comparison, we note that the price of ordinary, in this case smaller engine-equipped specimens – for example the on Használtautó.hu – HUF 2 million, i.e. barely one-seventh of the amount mentioned above.

In its new era, Vezess tested the V6 version of the Avantime – the test can be read by clicking here, straight from 2002:
