Development teams CodeManu and Endless Coffee are creating something special with publisher HypeTrain Digital! I just tried the demo for Tinkerlands – an upcoming co-op sandbox game about exploration, crafting and combat – and I can’t wait to share my experience!
I didn’t even notice while playing, but the game doesn’t have a classic tutorial – you just wake up after a shipwreck and be asked to find the captain. There were some tools in the box, and then… Well, do whatever you want. I didn’t manage to find the captain during my 40 minutes of playtime because I didn’t want to spoil the fun when I decided I wanted this game, but I did manage to build a house, explore a lot, and fight numerous opponents.
First I want to highlight one of my favorite things about games: the many features that make the game easier! There are a total of 10 items/tools you can hold on the bar at the bottom of the screen, but you only need to use the numbers 1 to 5 on the keyboard (or scroll five times), as each pair of items counts as one “selected”, and left and right click they use the first or second subject. This is great because you won’t find yourself panicking looking for the right number when you’re in trouble! Not to praise these mechanics too much, another feature I liked was the huge inventory size and simple HUD.
This simplicity also extends to combat and construction: despite the fixed perspective, it was intuitive for me to easily attack and dodge enemies, and when I was building a house, everything was done in seconds. If you’re a bit anxious, like me, no worries – if you misplace an item, just hit it with the pickaxe and you’ll get it back!
Enough about the smooth gameplay: let’s talk about the adventure. The island in Tinkerlands is overflowing with things to collect, from trees and rocks to shells and bones. I had a hard time focusing on the task because I wanted to run out and collect everything, and the punching animations were so satisfying that it was even harder to resist.
While I wasn’t tempted to collect massive amounts of wood and stone, I encountered a couple of NPCs; one wanted me to build him a house, though I haven’t been able to find out how, and the other (or the same old man?) was a salesman. According to the description on Steam, we will be able to build an entire city, and considering how easy and fun everything is, I can’t wait to try it!
Another fantastic thing is how easily I went from starting tools to a bunch of different tools and build stations. As someone who plays a lot of survival games, I expected to be “stuck” with basic tools for a while, but soon I had a stone axe, a saw, an iron and a furnace! This was pretty exciting.
Tinkerlands it has incredible potential – I would play it all the way through if I could, even though it was just a demo. I can’t wait to play with my wife, explore and build a beautiful city! I really have no complaints except for one small thing: I don’t like that the character walks slower when going sideways and faster at an angle.
If you like adventures, boss fights, and item crafting, I highly recommend giving Tinkerlands a try! Unfortunately, there’s no release date yet, but you can be sure I’ll be the first to try it out as soon as it’s announced.
