Thomas Tuchel should lead the English national team to the 2026 World Cup title. Former central defender Rio Ferdinand believes the German coach will end the Three Lions’ curse.
“I’ll even go so far as to say that Thomas Tuchel will win a tournament during his time with England,” Ferdinand said in a video on his YouTube channel. The new national coach could make himself “immortal” in the motherland of football, said the 45-year-old TV expert.
Tuchel will take over the vacant head coach position of the English national team from January 1, 2025, according to an official association announcement.
Tuchel succeeds Southgate at Three Lions
Gareth Southgate resigned from his position after losing the European Championship final in the summer. England U21 coach Lee Carsley recently looked after the Three Lions on an interim basis in the Nations League.
During his tenure, Southgate “did a fantastic job of building a team to get to two finals,” praised Ferdinand. The resigned trainer took over the English selection in 2016. At the 2021 and 2024 European Championships, Southgate and Co. only ended in the final.
Former Bayern coach Tuchel knows English football
The Three Lions have been waiting to win a title since 1966. Tuchel is the first German coach to take charge of the English national team. In any case, Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello have only had two foreign trainers on the sidelines of the proud football nation in its long history.
Tuchel already knows English football. The 51-year-old worked at Chelsea FC from January 2021 to September 2022 and won the Champions League with the Blues in his first season. Tuchel last looked after FC Bayern between March 2023 and June 2024.
