The independent candidate for the Presidency of Romania, Mircea Geoană, said on Sunday evening, October 13, that if he wins the elections, he will be an extremely severe president in judging the performance of the governments he will work with.

Mircea Geoană was asked, on Antena 3, who he will and who he will not want to appoint as prime minister, if he becomes the president of Romania.

“I don’t know who will be in charge of the Romanian parliamentary parties after the presidential and parliamentary elections. In the good Romanian political tradition, usually those who do not win lose the leadership. So we don’t know. Just as I think that for the president of Romania, Romanians at home and in the diaspora are looking at what kind of president profile we want in such a moment. We want a novice who is taking meditations or who is learning on the job or we want someone with experience. That is why for me, the future prime minister, as well as the future Cabinet, I will look very carefully at their competences, that they know a foreign language, that they have knowledge of the economy, that they have knowledge of administration, that they are not part of clans all kinds”, explained Mircea Geoană.

He stated that he will be uncompromising not only in the selection of the person for the position of prime minister, but also in what the parties have passed in the government program.

“For me, it will not be a problem to designate a prime minister, a lady or a gentleman. Who will it be? Obviously, appointed by the parties. But I will be uncompromising, not only in selecting the person, but also very attentive to what they promised in the campaign and in the governing program. No president so far has gone and held them accountable, slapped their face, talked to the people to say “hey, good people, you promised digitization, you promised ANAF that collects better, you promised companies of state led by craftsmen, not by politicians, you promised good education, good health, you promised low inflation”. Because my problem is not the power of the president, but the purchasing power of the people, which today is extremely eroded”, declared Mircea Geoană.

He was also asked if he will propose the prime minister from the party that will be in first place after the parliamentary elections.

“The Romanian Constitution does not oblige the president to give the first chance to the first party, except when a party wins over 50%. The president has the discretion, he has the freedom to choose as his lordship considers the person and possibly the combination of parties and the majority they make. There are customs in other countries, in Spain, in more democratic countries, in Austria. (…) The custom is to give the first chance to the first party. This has never happened in Romania”, stated Geoană.

Asked if he will give a chance in the appointment of the prime minister to the party that will be in first place in the parliamentary elections, Mircea Geoană answered: “I don’t know. I want to see it once more, because it’s a combination between the political score, which is important to me, and two if they come with a program and some people with whom I can collaborate”.

Mircea Geoană explained that he will be an extremely severe president in judging the performance of the governments he will work with.

“The idea that the president appoints someone and after that it is their business what they do, is over in Romania. If I win, I will be sure that what the parties promise, what I committed myself and my commitment to Romania, is a presidential program, I believe seriously, made with professional people, so the idea that I nominate someone and after that is over the president’s job… I will be an extremely severe president in judging the performance of the governments I will work with”, Mircea Geoană also declared.
