to pay a fine of 1.9 million

Social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, must pay a final fine of 10 million reais (about $1.9 million) to resume operations in Brazil, according to Bloomberg and CNBC, as cited by Engadged.

The fine was imposed by Brazil’s Supreme Court after the platform failed to comply with a court order for two days.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the company’s return to the Brazilian market “depends solely on full compliance with national legislation and court decisions, in accordance with national sovereignty.”

On September 19, X was fined for reactivating access for some users despite the ban on the site. A further fine was imposed after the company again defied the ban on September 23, this time through Starlink.

Elon Musk initially resisted Judge Moraes’ order to shut down several accounts suspected of spreading misinformation, considering it an act of censorship. Following this decision, Brazilian authorities blocked access to the platform and imposed fines for using VPNs to circumvent the ban.

Moreover, the bank accounts of SpaceX and Starlink were frozen and the amount of 18.35 million Reais was withdrawn to cover the previous penalties.

Finally, X began to comply with the court’s decisions, withdrawing the problematic accounts and appointing a legal representative in Brazil, which could allow the platform access to the country after paying the fine.
