The year we wished to enter our lives as soon as possible and correct the mistakes and sins of the previous one, could not have started worse. Again the murders, of which the one in Cetinje, in which 12 people, including two children, were killed, shook the entire region. And this time, the so-called politicians of general practice and clever analysts presented their theories about those terrible events, which reminded us of the story and similar events from the previous year. Quite simply, on one side, responsibility is demanded, on the other, the police and the lack of preventive measures are criticized by the trapped institutions, while only a few voices from the profession remind us that by destroying key value systems and adopting reality models of behavior, thinking and living, we have taken a detour that leads to all kinds of troubles.
In all of this, I would add the circumstance that all those who are even a centimeter “bigger” than the average were viewed with suspicion and without any respect. That’s the reason for dirty shoes, face and other moral ugliness.
Nevertheless, the new year 2025 should be started with certain agro-themes. There are so many of them that they often confuse which is more important and current than the others. Simply, it would be incorrect to leave out the farmers’ protests, whose series cannot be stopped.
A SELFISH YEAR
PLATE IN THE CENTER OF BOGATIC
Due to the blockade of the road near Badovinovac, from December 29 last year to the Pavlović bridge, a few days this January, farmers from the association “Naša mleko-Mačva” started their tractors again and are going to the center of Bogatić.
The building of the police station is also located there, where several farmers are being interrogated, who were given written reports about the circumstances from Badovina, when they were “persuaded” to disperse by members of the police and gendarmerie.
On that occasion, the “disobedient” participants of the short road blockade were told that they were doing dangerous things with dangerous means. So, as noted by farmer Slobodan Brkić, tractors have been declared dangerous vehicles. That kind of negative hyperbolizing of basic agricultural machinery is offensive and in a way reflects the administration’s attitude towards domestic food producers.
With the mentioned protest, they wanted to support their colleagues who were threatened with pre-trial and even criminal charges, but also to point out the demands that led to all their protests.
Namely, due to unfulfilled promises by the Government and the relevant Ministry, they demand that all their leaders, plus the Chairman of the Committee for Agriculture in the National Assembly, be relieved of their duties, that is, submit their resignations. Although such a thing sounds naive to many, the farmers from the Mačva area, but several other districts also believe that they will be persistent and persistent in this request…
The fact is that due to the nature of their work, that is, the circumstances that accompany it, farmers are increasingly forced to enter into political waters, because politics is literally everywhere, the question is how much does it interfere with their basic activity? If in 2025 they have to burn tractors on asphalt, even half as much as on fields, their balance sheets will be worse and worse.
This means that the relevant Ministry of Agriculture as well as the entire “tribal” community of their logistics must adapt to the primary producers and stop all forms of deception and empty promises. As far as I understand farmers, they want to have a valid answer to each of their questions.
TURNING THE PAGE
At the end of each old year, you can hear how everything will start faster and better in the new year. That, as one saying goes, a new leaf will be turned in the book of work and life. When it comes to strategic, i.e. long-term planning in agriculture, that leaf should have been turned over a long time ago. Without such a compass, it is difficult to prevent wandering, dissatisfaction, protests, wasting time and money.
Admittedly, at one of last year’s “overstrained” sessions of the National Assembly, it was heard that a team had already been formed to write the National Strategy for the Development of Domestic Agriculture, that is, agrarians. Some specific names were mentioned with the assurance that money was provided for the job.
However, there have been more such beginnings in the past few decades, but there has been nothing since the development of an agrarian strategy. I agree that writing such a document is a complex and professional job, but considering the number of faculties, institutes, expert services and two Ministries from that sector, something like that should be a song. I mean an easy and successful task!?
PEEK INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S YARD
If there are no willing “writers” here, there are in the neighborhood or somewhere further away. This mail stick, which is successfully used by restaurateurs and traders, could also be used in the agricultural sector. It is neither a master’s nor a doctoral thesis in order to avoid plagiarism, but the use of experiences, models, organization and proven practices of those regions and countries that have touched the stars themselves in agriculture.
Right at the end of last year, the ministers and accompanying entourage of 27 European Union countries sat down at a larger table to discuss and then draw conclusions on the Common Agricultural Policy for the period after 2027.
With this, they understood well that food security must be planned in time and in advance, because only in this way is it possible to avoid numerous unpredictable circumstances that lurk, both in the regional and world contexts.
Given that we are on the same continent and that the European Union is our largest export market for agricultural products, this means that most of their plans and strategies are applicable in our agriculture as well.
ONLY A SATISFIED FARMER IS SUCCESSFUL
In the conclusions on the Common Agricultural Policy, among other things, it is stated that innovations in this area will be of great importance for its sustainability. The competitiveness and resilience of production in the circumstances of increasingly frequent oscillations and crises to which food production is exposed is placed in a high place.
A special emphasis was placed on climate change and the need to find the most effective responses and adaptation content to increasingly aggressive weather events. Effective measures will be taken, according to the foreseen conclusions, in order to suppress the spread of infectious diseases in animals as well as against plant pests.
Nevertheless, the man, that is, the agricultural producer, was placed in the center of the aforementioned conclusions. As promised, money will not be used to support all types of farms and individual farmers, as well as processors and other participants from the chain, that is, the food production industry. Quite simply, it was estimated that only satisfied farmers can successfully implement business plans and all other challenges that accompany this activity…
With the expressed concern for the negative trend when it comes to the increase in the age of farmers, significantly greater support is planned for young agricultural producers as well as for all those involved in this production. Numerous supports and benefits are provided for women who are already involved in agriculture…
In order to create better harmonization in the relationship with the departmental and state administration, the simplification and shortening of all procedures related to exercising the rights and obligations of registered agricultural producers is foreseen…
So, this is only a small part of the set of conclusions on the Common Agricultural Policy of the EU, so it would not be bad to look over the “taraba” and appropriate what is applicable in our practice. It is neither a sin nor a shame. Because of this, no one will let the sniffer dogs off the chain, especially when it comes to ensuring food security in the long term. FOOD!!!
