Saint John of Prislop, celebrated on September 13, is an important saint of the Romanian Orthodox Church, known for his ascetic life and deep faith. He lived in the 15th century and was a monk at the Prislop Monastery, founded by Saint Nicodemus from Tismana. This monastery became a refuge for monks seeking spiritual peace and ascetic life.

The life and sufferings of Saint John

Saint John of Prislop, also known as “Saint John of SilvaČ™”, chose to live in prayer and severe fasting, in a cell dug by himself in the rock on the banks of the SilvuČ› stream.

He became known for his advice and blessings, being considered a saint during his lifetime.

His relics were honored and respected by the faithful, being brought, it seems, to Wallachia to monasteries such as Tismana or Cozia, according to Doxology.

On September 13, Orthodox believers celebrate the day of St. John of Prislop by attending religious services, especially at the monasteries and churches that bear his patron saint.

In some rural communities, pilgrimages are organized to places related to the saint’s life, where offerings are made and candles are lit.

It is an auspicious day to do good deeds and help those in distress, following the example of giving by Saint John.

These traditions reflect the respect and veneration the faithful have for Saint John of Prislop, considered an example of humility, prayer and devotion to God.
