Former Scottish footballer Ron Yeats died on Saturday at the age of 86. In the 1964/65 season, in the position of captain, he led Liverpool to their first triumph in the FA Cup. The club and the DPA agency informed about it.

Yeats, who worked as a hitchhiker, had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for some time. “The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Ron’s wife Ann, all his family and friends at this extremely sad time. Club flags will be flown at half-mast today as a sign of respect,” Liverpool said in an official statement.

Yates arrived at Anfield Road in July 1961 from Dundee United, within half a year he became captain and spent more than a decade at the club. He advanced with the team to the highest competition, which “The Reds” subsequently won twice with his contribution (1964, 1966).

His conversation with Queen Elizabeth II became memorable. after the 1965 cup final against Leeds (2:1 pp) when he broke etiquette and admitted he was “done”.

In the red jersey, he recorded 454 matches, netted 16 goals, and had the captain’s armband in 417 matches. Only Steven Gerrard surpassed this record.

After leaving Liverpool, he worked for three seasons as a playing coach at the Tranmere club and finished his career in the USA. He returned to Anfield Road in 1986 and worked as a scout. He considered the engagement of stopper Sami Hyypiä to be his greatest success from this period.
