Dead leaves premieres today on Finnish television.

Aki Kaurismäki’s latest film Dead Leaves (2023) garnered enormous praise not only in Finland but also internationally. Many respected film industry publications were sure that the film would compete for the best foreign film Oscar, but in the end the drama comedy starring Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen was left without a nomination.

Aki Kaurismäki was hardly saddened by the news.

“Nothing could interest me less than the Oscars or an Oscar nomination,” Kaurismäki acknowledged In an interview with Yle even before the premiere of his film.

“But since it seems to be a very significant award for some reason, I can’t refuse everything forever. That’s why I said, sure, we’re nominated if that’s what we want.”
