Local public broadcaster NHK and other local public broadcasters reported on the 7th that Japan’s Tokyo Stock Exchange will extend the trading end time by 30 minutes from 3 PM to 3:30 PM from the 5th of next month.

This is the first time in 70 years that the Tokyo Stock Exchange has extended its closing time, since it postponed the closing time from 2 PM to 3 PM in 1954.

Nikkei said, “The starting point for this extension was a large-scale system failure that occurred on October 1, 2020,” and added, “The Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Financial Services Agency, which have been advocating for an extension of time to expand trading opportunities for investors, have realized their long-held wish.”

Meanwhile, NHK reported that the Tokyo Stock Exchange is requesting that listed companies accelerate the announcement of financial statements. It is known that many Japanese listed companies often make related announcements after 3 p.m. to ensure that their financial statements do not have a drastic impact on their stock prices.
