At the end of December, 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka, who before her death was considered the oldest living person in the world, died in a home for the elderly in the city of Ashiya near Osaka in the south of Japan.

Itooka died of old age. She was born on May 23, 1908 in Osaka, the eldest of three children, and moved to Ashiya 30 years ago. She was also entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest living person in the world.

“During her long life, she gave us a lot of courage and hope. We thank her once again and express our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones,” the mayor of Ashiya said upon her death Ryosuke Takashima.

Japan is one of the countries with the oldest population on average, which is still rapidly aging. Many people in this country are over 100 years old, which numbered more than 95,000 last September.
