Foreign. British Islam critic Tommy Robinson, 41, has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison after pleading guilty to contempt of court. He is considered to have “undermined the principles of the rule of law” by releasing a documentary film about himself.

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, admitted breaching a 2021 court order on 10 occasions by spreading false allegations against a Syrian immigrant, according to Yahoo News.

The British government accused Robinson of “defying the court” and “undermining the principles of the rule of law” – including by publishing a film about himself titled Silenced which contained the alleged defamation.

Robinson’s lawyers argued instead that the process against the 41-year-old is politically motivated.

The judge ruled that the offenses were not “accidental, careless or merely negligent”, adding that “it is in the interest of the whole community that court orders are followed”.

As the verdict was read, Robinson, dressed in a gray suit and white shirt, stood looking up at his supporters and shrugged, according to Yahoo News. Several dozen of Robinson’s supporters filled the audience gallery and also gathered outside the court on Monday.
