To the saga Harry Potter has rocked an entire generation and has not finished moving new ones, with the series that is in preparation at HBO. With endearing characters and a story that has the power to enchant children from 7 to 77 years old, the magical universe created by JK Rowling has become an essential work of pop culture and if the characters that we love or that we love to hate are numerous, today we look at the ten best non-human characters of the saga.
#10 Norbert
A character who appears in the first year of Harry’s adventures, Norbert is introduced by Hagrid to our heroes first in the form of an egg, which the trio sees hatch before discovering a cute little dragon. Unfortunately, the baby dragon grew too quickly, and Hagrid had to part with it that same year to send it with Charlie Weasley – Ron’s older brother and renowned dragonologist – to Romania. It was only at the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallowsthat we have news of him again, to learn that it was not a male, but a female, who was therefore renamed Norberta.
#9 GRAUP
Hagrid’s half-brother, this giant is introduced to us in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as an endearing character, although a little abrupt and not particularly intelligent. Our gamekeeper hides Grawp from everyone in the Forbidden Forest, before realizing that with the horrible Dolores Umbridge, he risks being expelled from Hogwarts for his hybrid status and decides to give custody of him to Harry and Hermione. Subsequently, Graup attends Albus Dumbledore’s funeral the following year and even participates in the Battle of Hogwarts in the final volume of the saga.
#8 PATTERN ROUND
Half-cat and half-flayer, Crookshanks reveals himself to us as Hermione’s pet, which she takes in at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This traveling companion of our favorite witch does not take long to discover the true nature of Scabbers, who is none other than the traitor Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form. Crookshanks then helps Sirius and tries to catch the pesky rat several times and eventually leads our heroes to the Shrieking Shack, where they finally meet Harry’s godfather.
#7 BUCK
A character only seen on screen in the third adventure of our young wizard, he is however much more present in the books. We meet him during Hagrid’s first Care of Magical Creatures class. He is later sentenced to death before escaping at the end of that same year, then is later returned to Hagrid and the latter renames him Windstand, for the hippogriff’s own safety.
#6 FIRENZE
This centaur, well known to readers, is one of the first magical creatures Harry befriends in his adventure, but is unfortunately little exploited in film adaptations and we have done it justice in this article dedicated to it.
#5 CREATOR
Introduced as the servant of the Black family at 12 Grimmauld Place in the fifth book of the saga, Kreacher is a house elf who only respects pure-bloods and after Sirius’ death, Harry becomes his owner. The latter sends him to work in the kitchens of Hogwarts. Although quite unpleasant at first, We learn the following year that Kreacher helped Regulus Black extract Salazar Slytherin’s locket – the Dark Lord’s Horcrux – from his cave and the old house-elf even takes part in the final battle against Voldemort.
#4 THE NIFFLER
Iconic character of the film Fantastic Beasts and its two sequels, the Niffler is as endearing as it is exasperating, with its cuteness and its passion for all that shines. Although it is a real running gag in the adventures of Norbert Dragonneau, it ultimately proves to be very useful to the latter, in stealing the dark wizard Grindelwald’s blood pact at the end of the second film in the saga.
#3 TOM
Although less exuberant than the Niffler, this Botruc proves to be much more useful and a much more loyal friend to our magizoologist friend. A small being who looks like a green twig, Tom gets Norbert Dragonneau out of trouble on several occasions and even saves him from death, when our hero is sentenced to death within the Ministry of Magical Affairs of France, in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
#2 HEDWIGE
Our national Harry’s owl follows him from his first year at Hogwarts until his death at the beginning of the seventh book in the saga. A magnificent character with beautiful white feathers, Hedwig helps our hero throughout his adventure before sacrificing herself for him in a final flight against the Death Eaters. Harry is having a hard time recovering from this loss, she who was his only connection with the magical world when he was with his uncle and aunt and who turns out to be undoubtedly his oldest friend.
#1 DOBBY
One of the fans’ favorite characters of the saga, Dobby appears for the first time in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secretslike the Malfoy family’s house elf. At the end of that same year, Harry helps him free himself and he becomes a close friend of our young wizard. Subsequently, the house elf helps his friend on many occasions and among other things to find the Room of Requirement during his fifth year at wizarding school, before breathing his last after rescuing the Golden Trio from Malfoy Manor.
