Torrential rains in China. At least 11 people have been killed and dozens are missing after a bridge collapse

A section of the bridge broke and fell at an angle of nearly 90 degrees into the water.

China’s National Fire and Rescue Authority said it had dispatched a team to the scene, including more than 850 emergency workers, 90 vehicles, 20 boats and 41 drones.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out rescue effort following the disaster in Shaanxi province, which occurred at around 20:40 local time on Friday, following strong storms and flooding.

In recent decades, Beijing has embarked on a huge economic project to build an extensive network of highways, high-speed railways and airports. But a dramatic decline in economic expansion, poor infrastructure and safety oversight, and industries’ desire to save money and cut costs have led to more fatal industrial accidents.

China’s western and southwestern provinces have mountainous landscapes and strong rivers, making them particularly prone to flooding.
