Tourism, which is slowly gaining ground, is harassed by the Russian neighborhood

The languishing tourism is not only a concern for Estonia, but also for all other frontline countries, said hotelier Tauri Sumberg.

The growth of tourism in the countries bordering Russia was very small or non-existent last year. Also, Helsinki is one of those places where tourists are no longer happy to go, Sumberg said in the morning program of Äripää radio.

“Helsinki has suffered the biggest setback from the cancellation of its Finnair flights to Asia,” said the entrepreneur who owns eight hotels in Eastern Europe. “It affects their results very strongly.”

Although tourism is gradually recovering – 15% more foreign tourists stayed in Estonia in November compared to the same month in 2023 – the predictability of business makes it difficult for accommodation facilities. Namely, tourists make reservations a very short time in advance.

Sumberg also talked about Europe’s rising tourism star and how Estonian accommodation companies are doing. Viivika Rõuk talked.
