A tourist has lost his life in a shark attack in Egypt, but another tourist has been injured.
According to Reuters, Egypt’s Ministry of the Environment announced this on Sunday.
The fatal shark attack occurred in the waters off the tourist area of Marsa Alam.
The nationalities of the two tourists have not been disclosed.
Marsa Alam is located next to the Red Sea and is a popular destination for tourists interested in snorkeling and diving.
The water off Marsa Alam is described by the travel company Tui.dk as clear and full of coral.
According to the media Egypt Today Magazine, Egypt has declared a state of emergency in the area. At the same time, it is forbidden to stay in the water off Marsa Alam.
This is the second time this weekend that a person has lost their life in connection with a shark attack.
On Saturday, a 40-year-old man was killed by a shark in the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Australia.
Although attacks on humans are rare, the number of fatal, unprovoked shark attacks is on the rise.
Last year, 14 people died as a result of shark attacks, data from the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) showed earlier this year. The report is prepared by the University of Florida in the USA. Of the 14 attacks, 10 were unprovoked.
From 2018 to 2022, the average unprovoked fatal shark attack was six.
