Toyota Joins Ionna High-Power Charging Network

Toyota joins seven automakers that have teamed up to create Ionna, a new high-power charging network that aims to compete with Tesla.

Thanks to the arrival of the Japanese group as a new investor in the project In itcustomers of Toyota and Lexus will be able to access a public charging network that will have at least 30,000 fast charging points by 2030.

The Ionna project was created at the initiative of BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz et Stellantiswhich has just been joined ToyotaThe aim is to compete with Tesla’s network of superchargers for electric cars, with a new high-power charging station network in North America.

Ionna plans to commission its first batch of DC fast chargers in 2024, and will continue to build additional stations across North America throughout the decade, with the goal of commissioning at least 30,000 charging points by 2030.

A practical and easy experience

Powered by renewable energiesthe Ionna charging network will be accessible to all electric vehicles equipped with NACS or Combo CCS connectorsregardless of their brand. The joint venture already promises a “Seamless, vehicle-integrated, premium charging experience”.
To provide greater comfort to its users, Ionna plans stations with toilets, catering services, and also retail stores, all at strategic locations.
On the charging side, the locations will be practical and equipped with awnings, and will offer a Easy charging experiencewith functions and services seamlessly integrated into the in-car experiences of the applications of the car manufacturers involved. It will then be easy to reserve your charging station, plan a route to a station, but also pay for your electric charging sessions, while being able to keep an eye on the energy management of your car.

Ionna’s first charging stations set to go live in 2024 in the United States, followed by Canada.
