Originating in the Middle East, hummus manages to be delicious while being a nutrition champion. Not a fan? You’ll surely become one when you find your own variation on traditional hummus.
Just because the word hummus means “chickpea” in Arabic doesn’t mean you can’t vary it according to your tastes and desires! If the original recipe is based on chickpeas and tahini (sesame paste), just vary the spices or even use other legumes and vegetables to invent completely new recipes.
Colorful Hummus Recipes
The simplest things are often the best. As proof, making homemade hummus is really not complicated. The same goes for the variations.
Houmous betterave
The beet hummus is as beautiful to look at as it is delicious to taste. Proceed as with the Lebanese hummus for which you need sesame puree, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and herbs: parsley, salt, pepper, cumin and paprika.
You can either completely replace the chickpeas in the hummus recipe traditional with cooked beets or make half and half. Add some pumpkin seeds and parsley sprigs on top to make it even prettier.
To increase the flavors, use raw beets that you will make roast in the oven after having soaked them in oil and herbs. And hop, in the blender with all the other ingredients.
Houmous sans tahini
Don’t have any tahini on hand? No problem, it can easily be replaced with a littleSesame oil.
On the other hand, if it is the taste that you do not like, you can replace this sesame puree with any oilseed puree like almond or cashew nut
Houmous carotte
Between hummus and carrot, it’s already a love story as we love dipping crunchy sticks in creamy hummus at aperitif time! Combine these two by mixing one part chickpeas for two parts carrots and above all, don’t skimp on the cumin. You can also add a pinch of turmeric to enhance the color.
Another little variation that you will let us know about: replace the lemon juice with orange juice and some zest. Too good.
Pea hummus
With some fresh peas cooked beforehand in steam or very quickly in water, it’s even better! Mix the peas with tahini, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil. Add a few mint leaves and spring onions or failing that, spring onion.
If you don’t like the taste of sesame paste, you can replace with fresh cheese.
Chickpea-Free Hummus Recipe
Don’t like chickpeas or don’t have any left in stock? Try these recipes!
Lentil Hummus
Another easy hummus recipe: cook green lentils starting in cold water as usual. Once cooked and drained, let them cool. You can even cook them the day before. Mix with the usual chickpea hummus ingredients. Add a few crushed and roasted nuts.
Prepare a coral lentil hummus by mixing the cooked lentils with coconut creamgarlic, lemon juice, fresh coriander, cumin and chili pepper.
Houmous haricot rouge
Replace the chickpeas with red beans for a different hummus! As for spices, focus on paprika which goes very well with the legume. But you can also use a four spice mix.
More unexpected, but to be tested urgently: red bean hummus with peanut butter and smoked paprika.
You see, with hummus, anything goes! And what to eat hummus with then? Here too, we are spoiled for choice: raw vegetables to dip, pita bread, toast, as a complete dish with falafels or eggs, in a buddha bowl, in a sandwich or even in samosas.
The sesame in our Organic Tahin is produced in Paraguay according to the principles of fair trade. It will make your hummus, spreads, vinaigrettes, pasta dishes, quiches, cakes even more delicious…
